Cavan Native's Memoir, Never Say I Can't, Will Benefit Autism Research

John Clancy Recounts Travels from Ballyconnnell to Melbourne and to His Adopted Hometown of New York City. By John Mooney During his 78 adventure-filled years, sailor-actor-restaurateur and unofficial Cavan tourism ambassador John Clancy has lived a life like few others. Born in Ballyconnell, Co. Cavan, he sailed away from home as a teenager, viewed the Melbourne Olympics, worked at the legendary Toots Shor's Saloon in Manhattan, ran his own successful restaurant in Ireland. For the past decade, he has been a fixture as a host at Foley’s NY Pub & Restaurant (18 W. 33rd St.), which is run by his son, Shaun. For years, "Papa John," as he is lovingly called, was told he should write a book about his life. So at age 77, he sat down to do it. Proceeds from the self-published Never Say I Can't will benefit Enable Ireland, which helps parents of young children who have been diagnosed with disabilities such as autism. Hi Padraic thanks for your reply, found your excellent site this evening. I`ve been browsing the web passing the time. Taking my mind of the heavy snow falling outside. Very severe weather here in Coventry, reminds me of the hard winters In Ross in Co Meath in the 1940s/1950s. Fond memories of Eugine Leddy`s Ceili Band and Ken Brown r.i.p. playing in the Eldorado ballroom in Oldcastle. All my ceili band lps have been digitally remastered by myself. The lp of Eugine was recorded in Co Cavan lp done in New York, 5 tracks of E Leddy on one side, Ballinamere on the other side, I will take a photo of the record; cover tomorrow and email to you. The recording was done in cavan in the 1950s.The lp was done in new york for the Irish market there, it was never available in Ireland. I`m sure a lot of the late Eugine relations have never heard this recordi
