At the recent Irish World Awards we were delighted and privileged to be in a position to honour several people whose contribution to the local GAA we felt was worth acknowledging in a public way and we were equally delighted that these individuals accepted our awards. Pa McAvennie, Tom Watson, Mick Lenihan and Tadgh Meehan have all been long and valued servants of the Association in this country but more importantly, they have been loyal servants to their own little corners of the GAA. Pa McAvennie's loyalty and commitment to St. Josephs over the years needed to be seen to be believed. While clubs around him struggled and folded throughout the 1990s and earlier parts of this decade, Pa, along with the likes of his close friend Jim King, worked tirelessly to keep St Josephs alive and they reaped their rewards this year, when a St Josephs team, overflowing with young London born talent, lifted both the Junior Championship and League - a wonderful return for years of dedication from the genial Cavan (Butlersbridge) man.
